Peter Francis Hanratty
Peter Francis Hanratty, born Feb. 16, 1944, departed this life Thursday.
A native of Butler, Pete was a graduate of Butler High School where he excelled in track and field and received an athletic scholarship to Notre Dame. Pete received his bachelor's degree in languages from the University of Notre Dame. He received his master's degree in languages from Georgetown University.
As a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, he served in naval intelligence.
Pete was a linguist specializing in Russian and Chinese. He spent 20 years traveling the globe compiling notes for his book "Monsters Accused." For the past 20 years, he worked at the University of Pittsburgh while writing. Defining evil that future generations might learn from history is his legacy.
Pete is survived by his sister, Margie, and brother-in-law, Jerry Erskine; his brother, Terry, and sister-in-law, Kelly Hanratty; his sister, Peggy, and brother-in-law, Alva Smith; as well as aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Pete was predeceased by his father, Edward, and his mother, Josephine Tiberi Hanratty.
HANRATTY - A burial for Peter Francis Hanratty, who passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, will be private. He will be sadly missed.
