Dr. R. Robert "Bob" Stackman of Audubon, Pa., passed away Sunday in the Meadows at Shannondell.
He was born Jan. 30, 1923, in South Bend, Ind., and was the son of Clarence and Bessie (Cook) Stackman.
He was the husband of Joan (McBride) Stackman.
Dr. Stackman was a graduate of South Bend Central High School, Class of 1941, and received both bachelor's and master's degrees in history from Indiana University. He went on to receive a Doctorate in History from Michigan State University. This led him to Slippery Rock, where he was a history professor at Slippery Rock University from 1968 until his retirement in 1985.
Dr. Stackman enjoyed bowling, golf and bridge and was a loyal follower of the Indiana Hoosiers basketball team and San Francisco Giants baseball team. An avid reader of newspapers, Dr. Stackman was passionate about current affairs. A lifelong Unitarian, Dr. Stackman was most recently a member of the Main Line Unitarian Church in Devon, Pa.
After spending 20 years in Sun City, Ariz., the Stackmans returned to Pennsylvania in 2008.
In addition to his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Dr. Stackman is survived by his daughters, Susan, wife of Richard Black, Grove City and Linda, wife of Gene Wentzel, Boyertown, Pa.; and one son, Dr. William B. Stackman, husband of Teri Bump, of South Bend, Ind. He was proud grandpa to seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Lowell, Lyle, John, Virgil and Roland and two sisters, Evelyn and Mardel.
STACKMAN - A memorial service for Dr. R. Robert "Bob" Stackman, who passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13 in the Ashcroft Clubhouse, 1000 Shannondell Drive, Audubon, Pa.
