Ray Clair Soergel, 81, of Cooperstown, Middlesex Township, died peacefully Monday at his home.
Born on Nov. 19, 1931, in McCandless, he was the son of Claire Philip and Frances Fisher Soergel.
Raised in Wexford, he attended Mars High School from 1946 to 1948, and graduated from West View High in 1950. He also attended the University of Pittsburgh.
Trained as a bricklayer and stonemason, he worked in his father's business from 1947 to 1952 and from 1954 to 1962.
From 1952 to 1954, he served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman in Livorno, Italy, winning the National Defense Service Medal.
An accomplished marksman, he traveled with the Army shooting team in Europe, and later taught young people and adults safe shooting practices.
In 1962, he joined the Middlesex Township police, eventually becoming chief and retiring in 1991.
In 1967, he was awarded the Mars Area Educational Association's Distinguished Service Award. From the 1960s to the 1980s, he continued to compete in shooting championships, winning the NRA National Pistol Competition twice in the 1970s and a gold medal in the Pennsylvania State Olympics in 1983.
He was an endowment member of the National Rifle Association and a lifetime member of the Law Enforcement Alliance of America. He was also a member of the Single Action Shooting Association, the North American Hunting Club and the Fraternal Order of Police.
Known also for his lilting Irish tenor, he was much in demand from his youth onward as a soloist and chorister throughout the Pittsburgh area.
From 1991 to 2003, he was a township supervisor in Middlesex Township.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Lee Porter Soergel; his sister, Janet K. Alker of Wexford; three children and their spouses, Steven D. and Sue Anne Soergel of Cooperstown, Philip M. and Marcia W. Soergel of Columbia, Md., and Paula E. and David Kuhn of Waterloo, Neb.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Soergel - Friends of Ray Clair Soergel, who died Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, will be received at the Schellhaas Funeral Home, 5864 Heckert Road, Bakerstown, from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
A service of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with interment to follow at Allegheny Memorial Park, McCandless.
