Robert Harper Garrard, 81, of Butler succumbed to cancer on Saturday.
"God loves you and so do I." If you knew Bob Garrard, most likely you were treated to this phrase at the end of any time you met with him.
Robert graduated from Butler High School in 1950. He completed a post graduate year at Kiski School, before attending Bucknell University in the Class of 1955.
Robert joined the Marine Corps, where he attained the level of drill sergeant, serving on Parris Island.
Robert returned to Butler, joining his Uncle Ted Harper at the Wise Machine Co. and later acquired the manufacturing concern.
Wise Machine has been manufacturing in Butler since 1911, providing a solid place of employment for many in Butler and shipping equipment around the world.
Robert was a Mason, a Jaycee and a devout member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a lifetime member of the Esquire Players, of which he was one of the founding members. He was an ardent supporter of the arts.
Robert is survived by his wife, Lee; his brother, Richard, and his children, Beth, Jeff, Danny, Michael, Shelly, and Eric. Robert's grandchildren Ben, Brian, Ashley, Elle, Cassie, Will, Gray, and Griffin were united in their love for their Pap.
Garrard - A memorial service for Robert Harper Garrard, who passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church in Butler.
