Warren George 'Gus' Crouch Jr.
Warren George "Gus" Crouch Jr., 90, died peacefully March 28 with family by his side.
Gus was born June 26, 1922, to Hazel and Warren Crouch in Claytonia, Pa.
In 1949, Gus married Norma June Johnson, who he met at Slippery Rock University. After graduating from Slippery Rock, Gus pursued a degree in physical therapy from the Medical College of Virginia.
From Virginia, Gus and Norma moved to Ann Arbor, Mich., where they raised four children together. He worked as a long time trainer for University of Michigan's athletic department and spent one season with the Detroit Tigers. While working for the university, Gus was instrumental in organizing the U of M Hockey Dekers, and he served as its first president. One of his most treasured accomplishments was his development of the concept of the "Hockey Legends," which are still on display at Yost Ice Arena.
Besides being a trainer, Gus was also a teacher at Pioneer High School for many years. A former student recently described him as "inspirational." Gus touched many lives as an educator and a trainer. In his later days, he enjoyed many mornings at Washtenaw Dairy where friendships and memories were made.
Gus was a devoted husband, father and friend. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and students.
Gus is survived by his wife, Norma; his children, Bruce Crouch, Kathryn Gall (Wesley), Cindy Mast (Greg) and Kevin Crouch (Catherine). He also has seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
As Gus always said when parting ways, "If I don't see you in the future, I'll see you in the pasture."
