William F. Jackson Jr.
William F. Jackson Jr., 83, of Butler passed away at 7:10 a.m. Tuesday at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a courageous seven month battle with cancer.
He was born April 9, 1929, in Butler to the late William Jackson and Mary Angeline (Wynn) Jackson.
He was a 1949 graduate of Butler High School and was the January class president. He was voted most athletic in his class. He played football for the Butler Cubs from 1947 to 1949, and also played baseball for West End Broncos in late 1940s.
He married his high school sweetheart Janice Mayhew on Aug. 20, 1954. She preceded him in death on Jan. 26, 2011.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served as a military police officer during the Korean War.
Mr. Jackson retired from Butler ARMCO in 1991, after 32 years of service in the weld shop.
He was a member of American Legion Post 778 where he served on the legion's honor guard and was former service officer at that post. Mr. Jackson was also a member of American Legion Post 117, the East Butler Fireman's Club, the Western Pennsylvania Mushroom Club and the Ohio Mushroom Society, and he was a lifetime member of the NAACP.
Bill was an avid Steelers fan and attended the Steelers first two Super Bowls in 1975 and 1976. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and hunting wild mushrooms which he did for over 50 years even after becoming ill. He volunteered many hours at the VA Medical Center pushing patients to and from church services.
Mr. Jackson is survived by one son, William F. Jackson III and his wife, Amy, of Butler; one daughter, Rosalie A. Scott and her husband, Keith, of Vandergrift; three granddaughters; one grandson; five great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Elizabeth Anne Mays of Butler; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
JACKSON - In accordance with his wishes there will be no public visitation or funeral services for William F. Jackson Jr., who passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2013.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Butler Public Library, 218 N. McKean St., Butler, PA 16001 or to the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Memorial Fund, 107 Sunnyview Circle, Butler, PA 16001.
