Charles Chuck Wesley Wright, III, 66 of Danville, VA passed away February 26, 2013 at his residence. He suffered from lung cancer, and the efforts of the medical community in Danville allowed him the time to spend with his loved ones before he passed away. Chuck was born October 21, 1946 in Topeka, Kansas to Charles Wesley Wright, Jr. and the late Alice Clare Wright. In 1968 he married Sherri Borger after they met at the University of Kansas. They had two sons Cary and Alex Wright. His favorite family moments were summer camping trips in northern Wisconsin and Minnesota, more recent summer trips to Wrightsville Beach, NC, and attending his sons sporting and Scouting events. Chuck worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber for 44 years. He started work in the Topeka, Kansas plant before moving with his family to Highland Park, IL; Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; and finally retiring from the Danville, VA plant in 2012. He always enjoyed the challenges of Goodyear and loved his coworkers in all areas of the plant. The National Guard was a significant part of Chuck's life. He served for 27 years and attained the rank of Colonel in the Infantry, finishing his service as the commander of the I-116th Infantry in Roanoke, VA. Some of his favorite moments came from National Guard summer camp experiences with his infantry unit. Chuck's sons loved to play soccer, and he volunteered to help as a coach, as the President of the Danville Soccer Club for 20 years, a referee and a referee instructor. He officiated games for seven year old recreation players to local high school games all the way to the 1999 World Special Olympics in Raleigh, NC. He has trained most of the referees in the western half of Virginia who are currently working. The Boys Scouts of America has been a tremendous beneficiary of Chuck's leadership. As a youth member he attained the rank of Eagle and was a Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow. Chuck served as a Cubmaster for his two sons in Wisconsin, and also for his grandson Nicholas here in Danville. He was an adult leader for several years for local Troop 354 with Max Lassiter, and most recently was the District Chairman for the Dan River District of the Blue Ridge Mountains Council. In 2012 Chuck also received the Silver Beaver Award, Scouting's highest adult honor. Chuck also was a longtime member and leader at Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, the Grove Park Pool, a member of American Legion Post 1097 and the National Rifle Association. He is survived by his father Charles W. Wright, Jr., of Topeka KS, his brother Doug Wright of Topeka KS, his sister Catherine Howard of Lecompton KS, his wife Sherri Wright of the residence, his son Cary Wright and wife Rhonda from Danville, and his son Alex Wright and wife Lori of Alexandria VA. Chuck has one grandson in Danville, Nicholas Wright, and one granddaughter Tiffany Shaekley of Tacoma, Washington. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, March 10 at 2 pm at the Mt. Hermon Chapel of Norris Funeral Services. The family will be at the residence of Cary Wright, 130 College Avenue, Friday evening March 8, and a more formal visitation will be at Norris, Mt.
