Ryan, David P.
David Paul Ryan of Hilton Head, 75, beloved husband of Ruth Anne Ryan, died on August 15, 2013, one day after his 48th wedding anniversary, following a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Throughout his illness, he was touched by the support of so many friends from Hilton Head's Sea Pines community.
Born in Brookline, Massachusetts to James J. Ryan and Anna Smith Ryan, David was the second of six children. He attended the Franciscan Friars Seminary in Garrison, New York and later graduated from Fairfield Prep in Fairfield, Connecticut. He received his A.B. from Holy Cross College, and obtained graduate degrees from Fairfield University and New York University.
David began his career in education as a teacher at Central Catholic High School in Norwalk, Connecticut. He later became Assistant Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Bridgeport and then Assistant Superintendent of Schools for a school district outside of Manchester, New Hampshire. In 1980, he was appointed Superintendent of Schools for the Churchville-Chili School District outside of Rochester, New York. After retiring from that position, David and Ruth Anne moved to Hilton Head Island in 1996.
David is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ruth Anne, his brothers Terry and Kevin, his sister Ann Mellinger, his sons Jay and Christopher, his daughters-in-law, Cheryl and Alaina, Heidi Gray, and his beloved grandchildren, Catherine, Patrick, and Emily. David was predeceased by his sister Helen and his brother Jim.
