Herald L. "Harry" Spisak, 90, of Port Charlotte, FL, formerly of Fairfield, the beloved husband of 40 years of Theresa "Mitzi" Spisak, passed away peacefully in Port Charlotte Sunday, February 16, 2014.
He was born on August 25, 1923 in Bridgeport, to the late Louis and Elizabeth Spisak. Herald, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the retired owner and operator of a private sanitation company, moved from his longtime home of Fairfield, to Port Charlotte in late 2005. Herald was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and the V.F.W. in Port Charlotte and Fairfield. He was also a Charter member of the B.P.O. Elk's Lodge No. 2220, and served as an Exalted Ruler and was also Elk of the Year during his membership.
Harry enjoyed playing cards with the guys, traveling, spending time with his family, and talking about his youth in both New York City and time spent with his grandfather in Fairfield. He also enjoyed talking about his many adventures and travels while serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a hard worker all his life, and finally enjoyed retirement in warm and sunny Port Charlotte.
Herald is survived by his children: son, Stephen H. Spisak of Port Charlotte; daughters, Theresa L. Rainville of Port Charlotte, and Linda (Joseph) Matthews, Jr. of Stratford. He also leaves behind his seven grandchildren, Nichole, Stephen, Joy, Joseph III, Amanda, Scott and Elizabeth; seven great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, Herald was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.
Friends are invited to greet the family on Sunday, March 30, 2014 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Rd. in Fairfield Center. Interment with Military Honors will be on Monday, March 31, 2014 at 11 a.m. directly in St. Thomas Cemetery.
