John T. (Jack) O'Leary, age 91, of Bridgeport, passed away Tuesday August 7, 2012 in his home with his family at his side. He was the son of the late Thomas J. O'Leary, Assistant Fire Chief in Bridgeport, and Helen Walsh O'Leary. After graduating from Harding High School in 1939, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1941-1945 as a 1st Class Gunner's Mate. He was a veteran of World War II where he served in the Pacific Theater on a mine sweeper and a LST. He served as a Bridgeport firefighter for one year before joining the Bridgeport Police Department in 1947. It was as a policeman that he enjoyed a distinguished career that spanned 30 years, retiring as a captain. He was respected and liked by all. After retirement, he served several years as a bailiff in the Fairfield County Sheriff's Department. He was a member of the VFW, Fairfield Gaelic-American Club, Germania Schwaben Club in Bridgeport Retired Bridgeport Police and Fire Association, and the Police Association of Connecticut. John was predeceased by his beloved wife Betty (Curley) O'Leary and his sister, Helen O'Leary Shea of Groton, CT. Survivors include his five children, Patricia O'Leary of Ivoryton, Mary McNiff of Orange, John O'Leary and his wife Karen (Mendillo) of Stratford, Thomas O'Leary and his wife Janice (Gaudette) of Merritt, NC, and James O'Leary and his wife Tatiana of Norwalk. Grandchildren Jennifer (Russell),Michael and Elizabeth Feola, Sarah Conroy (Michael), James and Megan McNiff, Erin, Thomas, Jeremiah, Jaime, Jeanne, Brian, Alicia, and Anna O'Leary and Aleksandra Petrova. Great grandchildren Mary Grace and Patrick Conroy and Patrick Flynn, as well as several nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to attend his Funeral on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. (directly) at St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church, Bridgeport for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery Stratford, with full Military Honors.
