Shannon, John E.
John E. "Jack" Shannon, age 85 of Stratford, passed away on April 30, 2014 at home while surrounded by his family. Jack was born in Bridgeport and was the only child of Louise and Irving Shannon. Jack was a graduate of Central High School and the University of Bridgeport. He worked for Dresser Industries in Stratford for forty-one years. He raised his family in Huntington where he also worked selling homes for Roscoe Real Estate for over twenty years. Jack was a Korean War era veteran who served for two years with the Army of occupation in Germany. Jack could best be described as slow to anger and quick to smile. He never had a bad word to say about anyone. The simplest things in life gave him the greatest pleasure, shooting pool with friends, betting the ponies or fishing late into the night, as well as playing poker with his Oronoque buddies. But Jack's greatest pleasure was spending time with his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He leaves behind his wife of 57 years Elizabeth "Betty" Skerritt Shannon and six children, Mary and Jarett Crooks of Stratford, James and Kathleen Shannon of Franklin, TN, Michael Shannon of West Hartford, Timothy and Colleen Shannon of Frederick, MD, Meghan and José Davila of London, England, and David and Amy Shannon of Litchfield, and his thirteen grandchildren. He also leaves behind his cousin, Robert Shannon of Stratford, and was predeceased by his cousin, Richard Shannon, both of whom were like brothers. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00a.m., meeting directly in St Lawrence Church, 505 Shelton Avenue, Shelton, with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family in St. Michael's Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may call Thursday (TODAY) from 4:00p.m. to 8:00p.m., in the Redgate - Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull. Those who so desire may make memorial contributions in Jack's name to the Rev. Thomas A. Murphy, S.J. Scholarship at Fairfield College Preparatory School, 1073 North Benson Road, Fairfield, CT 06824.
