Joe proudly joined the US Navy and served from 1942 - 1946 where he received numerous medals, including a Purple Heart for injuries he had received in the torpedoing and sinking of his ship, the USS Fechteler.
After the war, Joe played winter ball and joined the New Iberia Evangeline League where he played with future baseball, basketball and TV star, Chuck "The Rifleman" Connors. Joe met future Hall of Fame star, Stan Musial, who advised Joe and led to a professional baseball contract with the Philadelphia Athletics organization. A broken knee in the off-season ended his dream of a baseball career. Joe had the privilege of playing against Hall of Fame player, Satchell Paige. He had a passion for golf and was proud to have accomplished a hole in one. Joe was a member of the Bridgeport and Stratford Oldtimers Athletic Associations, where he had been honored for his achievements and contributions to local sports.
Joe worked for Singer, Corp. and Harvey Hubbell, Inc. where he retired from in 1991.
He was an active member of Holy Name of Jesus Church in Stratford. Although unable to continue to attend Sunday Mass, he proudly supported their annual nut and poppy seed sale by making the cardboard bases for each and every roll. Joe was an ardent supporter of the American Red Cross and over his lifetime had donated over 12 gallons of blood to help others.
