Homza, M.D, L. Ronald
L. Ronald Homza, M.D. met his Maker on Monday, November 11, 2013. Ron, the son of an anthracite coal miner, Joseph Homza and wife Elizabeth Zowadney Homza from Jessup, Pennsylvania, came to Bridgeport in 1941. Ron was predeceased by his brother Joseph Edward in 1947, following the latter's service in the European Theater during World War II. Ron attended Bridgeport Public Schools and graduated from Harding High School in 1949. Following his graduation from Fairfield University in 1953, Ron spent a year at Fordham University before enrolling at Creighton University Medical School in Omaha, Nebraska. Upon his graduation in 1958, Ron married Mary Lourdes Wiedl of Danbury, CT, and returned to Bridgeport, where he interned at St. Vincent's Hospital, and joined the Connecticut Army National Guard. Ron then opened a general practice in his old neighborhood on the East side of Bridgeport. In 1963, he was awarded a Fellowship in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at The Rusk Institute at New York University. Again, he returned to Bridgeport following the completion of the fellowship in 1965. At this time, Ron was appointed Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at St. Vincent's and continued in that capacity until his retirement in 1996. Through the years, he belonged to the Bridgeport Medical Association where he had several offices including the Presidency of that organization in 1972-1973. He was also a member and subsequently President of The Connecticut Physical Medicine Society, and its Representative to the Section on Physical Medicine to the Connecticut State Medical Society. Ron was a member of the Fairfield County Medical Association, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He was on the Consulting Staff of St. Joseph's Manor and its Board. He continued his duty in the National Guard through the early 1970's, his last appointment there being the Surgeon to the Adjutant General. Ron dedicated his life to his family and his medical profession. He was always generous with his time, wisdom, and love. Ron was a man of many interests. He derived much satisfaction from creating oil paintings that adorn the homes of family and friends. On their travels, Ron and Mary never passed an art museum without entering. While the children were young, the family enjoyed camping trips in the northeast. During his retirement years in Goshen, Connecticut, family and friends stopped in to enjoy Ron's wit, humor, conviviality, and culinary creations. Ron was known for hosting exceptional parties especially on Christmas and Memorial Day. "Poppy" will be missed by his grandchildren, with whom he spent countless hours at sporting events, school plays, and card games. He leaves his beloved wife of fifty-five years, Mary, their five children and eight grandchildren: Joseph Louis (Eileen Massey), their children Meredith, Joseph, and Jack of Stratford; Dr. Anne Elizabeth Homza and her daughter Michaela Aladjem of Arlington, Massachusetts; Michael Keating and his daughter Lauren of Boise, Idaho; Charles and Margaret Homza Langworthy and their daughter Mary Frances of Ferrisburgh, Vermont; and Dr. Thomas Xavier (Julia Cavanagh) and their sons William and Jonathan of Anchorage, Alaska. There will be no calling hours. A memorial mass will be held at Saint James RC Church in Stratford, Connecticut at 10:30am on Friday, November 29, 2013, after which the family will greet Ron's friends at a reception celebrating his life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent's Foundation for Rehabilitation Services, 2800 Main St., Bridgeport, CT 06606 or to the in Ron's honor.
