Stopa, Capt. Louis F.
Capt. Louis Frank Stopa, age 88 of Fairfield, the loving husband of the late Nancy E. Stopa, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 1, 2014 with his family by his side. Born in Bridgeport, Capt. Stopa was a graduate of Roger Ludlowe High School where he excelled in both baseball and football. He was so good that he was asked to try out for the New York Yankees. He later went on to play in the Fairfield Semi-Pro Football league. Capt. Stopa was drafted right out of his senior year of high school and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy on a destroyer in the Pacific during World War II. He was a lifelong Fairfield resident.
He retired from the Fairfield Fire Dept. after thirty years of service where he moved up through the ranks to Captain. He started his career with his brothers serving as volunteer firefighters. His brother, Joseph became the first Fire Chief in Fairfield and Capt. Stopa and his brother, Frank all served their town as firefighters. The Fire Dept. was a brotherhood that he truly loved.
Capt. Stopa always believed in the good in people and treated everyone with respect. He instilled in his family the values of working hard to achieve your goals and at the end of the day to love your family. He had a wonderful sense of humor, could tell a joke and sing karaoke with the best of them.
Capt. Stopa is survived by his three devoted sons, Gerald M. Stopa and his wife Delores of Stuart, FL, Thomas P. Stopa of Torrington and Jeffrey R. Stopa and his wife, Lorraine of Fairfield; his cherished grandchildren, Jeffrey Stopa and his wife, Kate, Jessica Paules and her husband Derek, Michael Stopa and his wife, Meghan, Jennifer Loschiavo and her husband, Andrew, Kaitlin , Casey and Maggie Stopa; his two sisters, Stella Lee and Agnes Graceski, both of Fairfield; his sister-in-law, Anita Schelmetic and her husband Ron; his brother-in-law, Fred Klein and his wife Pat; and his seven great grandchildren, Dominick Spadaro V, Mackenna Paules, Emerson Stopa, Tyler & Hailey Loschiavo and Autumn and Eli Stopa. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his two brothers, Frank Stopa and Fire Chief Joseph Stopa.
