Raymond Lee Hooper Jr. 90, of Fairfield, CT husband of Rita Vigilante Hooper passed away Saturday afternoon, February 15th, 2014 at Bridgeport Hospital.
Mr. Hooper was born on April 4, 1923 in Canton, Ohio son of the late Raymond L. Hooper Sr. and Emma (Howells) Hooper. Prior to moving to Fairfield ten years ago Mr. Hooper resided in Westport for 47 years. He was a graduate of Canton-McKinley High School where he served as class president and was a three sport athlete. Mr. Hooper's college education was interrupted by WWII, where he served as a U.S. Navy Fitness Specialist in Martha's Vineyard, RI and at Harvard University. Mr. Hooper returned to graduate from Denison University in Granville, Ohio with a degree in Economics and received a Master's degree in Foreign Trade from Thunderbird School of Global Management located in Glendale, Arizona. Following graduate school, he was transferred to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Brazil for seven and a half years with Dun & Bradstreet where he established the D&B reference book called the Synopsis Dun. Returning to the U.S. he continued his sales/management career with D&B in New York for a total of 30 years.
While residing in Westport, Mr. Hooper served on the RTM and the Westport Recreation Commission. He was also past president and former coach with the Westport Little League, a former volunteer driver with the American Red Cross, Mid-Fairfield County Chapter and Co-Chairman of the Disaster Committee. In retirement, Mr. Hooper enjoyed fifteen years as a substitute teacher at Bedford Middle School where he was loved by all of his students.
Raymond was passionate about golf, bridge, travel, water activities and politics.
He was a huge fan of the NY Mets and the UConn Women's Basketball Team.
A loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather he will be dearly missed by his wife of 66 years, three children, Jeffrey D. Hooper of Hamilton, MA, Debra Hooper Fisher of Westport, CT and Michael B. Hooper and his wife Jill of Fairfield, CT, three granddaughters, Kimberly Fisher Warren, Emily C. Hooper, Jane E. Hooper, one great grandson, Raymond M. Warren, several nieces, nephews and his faithful dog, Henry. He was predeceased by his sister, Barbara H. Biggers.
