Susan Andrea Shola, age 57, of Stratford passed away on January 20, 2014 at Smilow Yale New Haven after a courageous nearly two year battle with pancreatic cancer. Susan graduated from Lauralton Hall, and went on to earn B.A. s in double majors; English and Classics (Ancient Greek and Latin). She spent her junior year abroad in the Classical Studies program on Athens, Greece. Upon graduation, Susan attended Cornell University and received her teaching certification. She then followed her family roots, and moved to Athens, Greece for almost a decade and taught ESL (English as a Second Language) at the Hellenic International School and the Strategakis Language Institute. A gifted linguist, Susan spoke six languages. She celebrated all cultures and as a world traveler, believed travel was the best form of education. After returning to the US, Susan earned a M.A. in International Studies at Wesleyan University, and a M.A. in TOEFL at Fairfield University. Susan was a dedicated and gifted educator and taught ESL at Yale University Language Institute, University of Bridgeport, Scared Heart University and Global LT. Susan was the beloved daughter of Elizabeth Andry Shola of Stratford and the late Michael Shola. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her loving sisters; Brenda Shola Zebelman and her husband Wesley of Wallingford and Micheline Shola of Stamford; her nephew, Michael Baldino and his wife Deana of Hamden; and her great nephews, Ryan and Michael Baldino Jr. of Hamden. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to: Smilow 8th floor Oncology team, Desiree, RN, Dr. Jill Lacy, Yale East Pavilion 9-5 and special gratitude to Dr. Charles Kochan. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 10:30 Directly to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 4070 Park Ave., Bridgeport. Interment will follow in the Union Cemetery, Stratford. There will be no prior calling hours.
