Cherneskey, Walter
CHERNESKY, Walter Edward, 86, passed away peacefully at the Ludlowe Center for Health and Rehabilitation in Fairfield on May 5, 2013. Walter was born in Bridgeport, the son of Anna (Tomchik) Chernesky and Walter J. Chernesky. He attended Warren Harding High School as part of the class of 1944, but enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 as a radioman second class, and stationed on the U.S.S. Bon Homme Richard in the Pacific during WWII. He was awarded his diploma upon returning to the States in 1945. After the war, Walt joined the Bridgeport Fire Department and retired in 1977 with the rank of Captain. He was also a talented and avid musician, performing as a part-time professional, giving private lessons, and serving as a full time organist at several churches, the first of which was Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Bridgeport beginning at age 16 - and the last service he played was on December 2, 2012 at First Baptist Church of Shelton, a total of 70 years. Survivors include his three children, son James Chernesky and his wife Lisbeth of Oxford, daughters Laura Corubia and her husband Robert of Bonita Springs, Florida and Cynthia Dworken and her husband Jeffrey of Easton, six grandchildren, Matthew Chernesky and his wife Angela, James Chernesky, Jr., John Chernesky, Stephanie Dworken, Benjamin Dworken and Jared Dworken, one great grandchild, Julia Chernesky, one sister, Olga Picard of Hilton Head, S.C., and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Ann, to whom he devoted most of his life, and two sisters, Ruth Chernesky Ward and Shirley Chernesky Counter. A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Shelton, 178 Leavenworth Road, Shelton, CT, on Friday, May 10, 2013 at 11 AM.
