William G. Cassel passed away March 6, 2013 in Bridgeport Connecticut amongst family and friends. Bill was born on June 25, 1926 and grew up in Dayton, Ohio. He attended Longfellow Elementary, Colonel White Junior High, and Fairview High School. Bill met the love of his life Joe Anna Brown, a fellow Daytonian in the eighth grade, and they married ten years later. Bill entered the U.S. Navy via the V-12 medical officer program, which included undergraduate schooling at Denison University, Western Reserve Medical School, an internship at Ohio State University and several years stationed at Treasure Island in San Francisco. Upon return to civilian life, Bill and Joe Anna moved to Rochester, Minnesota where they started their family while Bill did his residency and a fellowship in cardiology, and then practiced as a member of the Mayo Clinic medical staff. In 1957 Bill and Joe Anna returned to Dayton where they raised their family of four girls while Bill practiced cardiology and internal medicine, first in partnership with his father, Homer D. Cassel and later as a partner in Dayton Internal Medicine Associates. He was on the staffs of Good Samaritan, Miami Valley, and Kettering Memorial Hospital, where he also served as chief of staff. Bill shared his love of the outdoors with family and fellow sportsmen through weekend farming, bird hunting, fishing, bike riding and long walks in the woods with his Labradors and daughters. He relied on Joe Anna to bring the arts and a love of history and geography into his life. Some of their biggest disputes focused on the details of ancient wars and shifting geopolitical boundaries... All in good fun. Bill and Joe Anna enjoyed tennis, golf and swimming together, summer trips to Michigan and the Georgian Bay, world travel and later in life visits with their children in New England and California, and friends throughout the world and in Naples, Florida.
Bill is survived by his four loving daughters and their families, Cathy and Tom Talmadge of Westport, Connecticut; Polly Cassel and Bob Cilman of Northampton, Massachusetts; Beth Cassel of San Rafael, California; and Martha Cassel of Cambridge, Massachusetts; grandchildren Carolyn, Stella, Eva, and Rudy; and sister Carol Badgley of Dayton and Naples. A spring memorial service will be held on April 27, 2013, 11:00am at Christ United Methodist Church, 3440 Shroyer Rd, Kettering, Ohio.
