MILLER, Howard P.
September 3, 1913 - November 13, 2012
Howard P. Miller, a dear father, grandfather and friend left us on November 13, 2012, in Calgary at the age of 99. He leaves his much loved family, daughter Anne Buckley; grandchildren, Jamie (Shizu) Holden, Pamela (Mike) Leziert, Geordie (Noa) Holden and Brian (Lydia) Buckley; seven great- grandchildren, Saya, Ami, Breanna, Alec, Ashley, Brett and Jillian; his sister-in-law Jessie and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by Amy - the love of his life, brothers Fred, Sidney, Glen, sister Vina. Born in Winnipeg in 1913, Howard lived a life of love, dedication and service, leaving behind a wonderful legacy for his family, church, YMCA, Rotary, and many other organizations, in which he was actively involved. Howard married Amy Laing on June 22, 1940. Their mutual devotion and love for each other carried them through 55 years of marriage. They loved the cottage in Whytewold, Manitoba, which was a place to spend time with family. They both enjoyed travel, latterly spending winters in Palm Springs. Howard's career began with The Toronto General Trust, and progressed through several company merges to what is now TD Canada Trust. In 1952 he was transferred to Toronto, 1955 to Calgary, 1969 to Winnipeg and finally back to Calgary in 1976 to retire. The YMCA was an enormous part of Howard's Life, he was a member for 82 years. He deeply embraced their philosophy of "Spirit, Mind, Body" and firmly believed he learned more than he gave. In 1983 the Governor General presented Howard with the YMCA Fellowship of Honour, the Canadian YMCA's highest award. A dedicated Rotarian since 1956, he received the Distinguished Rotarian Award in 1995 and The Cleven Award in 2010 for Outstanding Service and Commitment to the Rotary Club of Calgary South. Howard was a life member of the Calgary YMCA, the Providence Child Development Society and The Institute of Chartered Secretaries. He was a member of the Calgary Golf and Country Club, The Manitoba Club and St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. In 1977, during The Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth, Howard was presented with the Queen's Medal for Community Service. We wish to thank all the very caring staff at Newport Harbour.
