CARLSON, Stewart
October 18, 1928 - July 2, 2013
Stewart Carlson of Calgary died peacefully after a long and full life, rich with family and friends. After growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Stew studied chemical engineering and geology at Cornell University. He then served as an officer in the U.S. Navy where his ports of call included Morocco. This taste of Africa led to the adventure of a lifetime, when Stew and a Navy friend drove their Volkswagen van south through the Sahara Desert and into the jungles of east Africa. Returning home, Stew earned a Masters degree in geology at Stanford University and began his career as a petroleum geologist. He had fond memories of his early field work in Colorado and Wyoming. Stew married his Canadian sweetheart Margaret McCosham, and raised two sons in Texas and Connecticut before moving to Calgary in 1970 to head the Canadian oil and gas division of American Trading and Production Corporation. After retiring, Stew enjoyed being involved in a small oil company that he started with some of his oil patch friends. He also took delight in family visits and particularly enjoyed playing checkers with his grandchildren. In the last years of his life, Stew faced physical challenges with courage, optimism, and grace. He was able to remain in his home thanks to his strong will and his dedicated caregivers. The family would like to especially thank Maria, Willie, Charles, Joy, and Shanique, who Stew considered to be like family. Stew is survived by his sons Michael and David, his daughter-in-law Lisa, and his grandchildren Nathan and Joanna, who loved him dearly. He is predeceased by his parents and brother, and by his wife Margaret. A celebration of Stewart's life for family and friends will be held in the future.
