Conrad Miller Obituary
Conrad Miller, 82 of Canon City, Colorado, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, August 30, 2014. Born in Ogden, Utah to Clyde and Helen Miller, the family moved early on to Greeley where Con went to high school and then Colorado State College of Education. There he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and met and married Norma Lee Stark, his wife of 60 years. Con had wide and varied interests. For 28 years he served in the Air Force, on active and reserve duty, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He served on the Canon City Area Metropolitan Recreation and Park District for 10 years and the City Planning Commission for 8 years. He was a member and Deacon of the First Baptist Church and held many other offices in the church over the years. He was a member of the Elks Club, Lions Club, JayCees, and Masons. Con worked for Fremont County School District RE-1 for 30 years. Beginning his career as the high school band director, Con became an elementary school counselor, earned a Master of Arts from Western State College in Education Administration and eventually served as principal at McKinley and Skyline Elementary Schools. He retired in 1991. Music was always a large part of Con's life. He worked through college playing the clarinet in a dance band and, in addition to directing the high school band, he directed the First Baptist Church choir for 20 years, he was President of the Community Concerts Association for 5 years and member and Co-Organizer of the Southern Colorado Community Band for 11 years. He was a member of the Pueblo West Community Band for 2 years and played with the Pueblo Municipal Band in the summer. Conrad was much adored by his family and held in high-esteem by his friends. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a fashion sense like no other. He was always up for something new, trying his hand at sailing, horse-back riding and camping; all activities that he enjoyed with his family and friends. Conrad is preceded in death by his much-loved and oft-remembered daughter Alicia Ann (Miller) Johnston, his cherished little brother Robert (PeeWee) Miller, and his parents Clyde and Helen Miller. He is survived by his wife, Norma Lee Miller, daughter Cathleen (Rick) Spielman, son Chris (Denise) Miller, his beloved grandchildren, Zach Spielman, Trevor (Keeley) Spielman, Kate, Collin, and Emmalia Miller, his cousin Carol Wright, his sister-in-law Janet (Bill Craig) Schaumburg and various aunts, uncles and cousins. The memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 4, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Canon City, CO. Memorial donations may be made in Conrad's name to the Southern Colorado Community Band, First Baptist Church of Canon City, or Sangre de Cristo Hospice & Palliative Care in care of Holt Family Funeral Home at 806 Macon Ave., Canon City, CO 81212.
