Edward Van Westenberg Obituary
Edward R. Van Westenberg, 81, of Florence, CO, died Saturday, July 12, 2014 at the Bruce McCandless State Veterans Home. He was under the care of Sangre de Cristo Hospice and his eldest daughter, Teresa Luthye, for nearly 5 weeks before going to the Veterans Home. He was born August 3, 1932 in Englewood, CO, but lived many places in Colorado before Florence. Ed served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War becoming a Sergeant and earning the Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars and the United Nations Service Medal before leaving the service. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was the post commander in Grand Junction for several years. Ed worked for Public Service Company of CO as an electrician eventually retiring after 35 years in 1993. After retiring, he travelled to Europe twice and met other members of his family in The Netherlands. He also made two trips to Alaska. He enjoyed fishing, spending time with family and an occasional trip to gamble in Cripple Creek with his friend, Carma Todd. Ed is survived by two maternal uncles Delbert and Elmer Brown, one brother, Everett (Karen) Van Westenberg of Arvada, CO, two daughters - Teresa (Ray) Luthye of Longmont, CO and Trudi Van Westenberg of Greeley, CO. He had three grandsons, Chris Luthye, Andrew Gehrig and James (Tiffany) Gehrig and one great-granddaughter, Samantha Gehrig. Ed is also survived by his good friend Carma Todd of Florence, CO, her daughter, Michelle Lach, of Canon City and her son, Mark Todd of Leadville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Isaac Van Westenberg and Lillie Maybelle Woodruff, his wife Betty Ann (Richards) and two sisters Maybelle and Toni. A graveside service is planned for Friday, July 18, 2014 at Union Highland Cemetery (1240 Moore Dr. Florence, CO) at 11:00 a.m. A reception follows the service at noon in the private dining room at the Two Sisters Restaurant in Florence 104 E.
