Jerry Schmallen Obituary
Jerry Schmallen passed away on Monday, February 3, 2014, he was born on February 10, 1942 and raised in Fargo, ND. After graduating from high school he served his country in the U.S. Air Force until 1964. Studying Economics he received a B.A. from Moorhead State College in MN. He then landed his first professional job with IBM working in sales until he switched careers and taught high school at Assumption High School in Wisconsin Rapids, WI. Following his philanthropic instincts, Jerry found his way to Canon City, CO in February 1972 as a Development Director for the Holy Cross Abbey. Several years later, the artistic side of Jerry was showcased in his business, Canon Interiors. It was during this time he was introduced to the love of his life, Denise Grathwohl whom he married in October 1986. He actively served his community in a variety ways including being a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary International, served as President of Shadow Hills Golf Club and as a Deacon in St. Michael's Catholic Church. Upon retirement, an active pursuit of golf awaited Jerry and Denise. Their quest took them to Indio, CA back to Canon City then ultimately residing in Mesa, AZ since 2009. Jerry Schmallen is survived by his wife, Denise, two sons, Marc and Paul (Sherry), and two grandchildren; brother Tom (Carol)Surprise, AZ; and sister Kathy (George) Casper, WY. He is also survived by numerous loving in-laws, nieces and nephews and many long time close friends. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 pm, Friday, February 7, 2014 at Victory Lutheran Church, Mesa, AZ. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to: the woundedwarriorproject.org or michaeljfox.org (Parkinson's Research). Jerry will be remembered as a man who loved life with a passion, entertaining family and friends with flair. Additionally, who can forget his culinary ability, spectacular floral gardens, his artistry in creating stained glass masterpieces, golf and of course the sparkle in his life, his wife Denise.
