On October 15, 2013, Katherine Elizabeth (Griffin) Piltingsrud, 86, passed away peacefully in Canon City, CO. She was being visited and comforted by family when she passed. Born December 2, 1926 in Silver City, New Mexico to Marie (Carney) Griffin and James Walter Griffin, Katherine was the youngest of three children. Katherine attended the University of New Mexico and worked during World War II as a secretary for the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, NM. There she met her future husband, Clarence "Pilt" Piltingsrud and they were married on February 15, 1947. They had two children; Thomas (Tom) was born in 1949 and Sara in 1959. Katherine and Pilt moved to Boulder, Colorado in 1952 where Pilt worked for the Rocky Flats Plant, and Katherine raised the family while maintaining an active role in the community. Katherine volunteered for Boulder Hospice, the American Cancer Society, Beta Sigma Phi, and the Canon City Senior Center. She was a member of St. Martin De Porress Catholic Church in Boulder, CO, and St. Benedict Catholic Church Florence, CO. Pilt and Katherine were long time members at the Boulder Elks Club and attended countless functions with their friends. Katherine and Pilt retired to Canon City Colorado in 1994. Katherine had a sweet and caring personality, and she will always be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor! She always had a joke to tell, and her wit would light up a room and fill it with laughter. Katherine is survived by two sisters, Patricia Halet and Mary Jane Martens both of San Antonio, TX; her children, Thomas (Peg) Piltingsrud and Sara (Van) Hammond; five grandchildren, Richard (Svetlana) Piltingsrud, Rebecca (Scott Poe) Piltingsrud, Emily (William) Phillips, Christopher Reyes and Griffin Reyes. Katherine especially enjoyed her seven great-grandchildren, and was blessed to have spent time with each of them Jenkins, Bjorn, Gunnar, Jack, Ingrid, Finn and Arvid. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Marie (Carney) Griffin; her husband, Clarence (Pilt) Piltingsrud; and two grandsons, Erik and Shawn Piltingsrud. Katherine will be missed by all, but will live within the hearts of her friends and loving family forever. A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Holt Chapel of the Garden in Canon City. Memorial donations may be made to the Florence Arts Council, 201 East Second Street, Florence, CO 81226 or the Boulder Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. Arrangements are under the care of Holt Family Funeral Home. Online condolences @ www.holtfamilyfuneral homes.com
