Kenneth Owens Obituary
Kenneth E. Owens, 92, a former Canon City Police Chief, died October 30, 2012 in Canon City, CO. He was born in Davidson, TN on February 5, 1920 to Jasper and Martha Owens. Ken was united in marriage to Dorothy "Dot" Tabor on November 10, 1941; she preceded him in death on June 20, 2010. During World War II, he served 33 months in England, North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. During his service, Ken received the Bronze Star "for service over and above the call of duty". Returning from the war, Ken and Dot moved to Greybull, WY, at which time he worked for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. Later they moved to Casper, WY where he worked for the Standard Oil Company. In 1951, the Owens moved to Canon City where they were co-owners of the Cadaleen Motel, (formerly the Governor Peabody Mansion). Ken went to work for the Canon City Police Department, and was appointed Chief of Police, a position he held until his retirement from the department in 1973. He then worked for Brook Bail Bonds, as a bondsman from 1973 until 1978. In 1978, Ken then went to work for the Dept. of Corrections, retiring in 1986, and then worked part-time for Holt Family Funeral Home until 2001. Ken was a member of the First Baptist Church for 51 years, and held numerous office positions. He has been a member of the Canon Community Baptist Church for the past 11 years. In 1954, Ken was named "Man of the Year" by the Canon City Chamber of Commerce. He was very active in the community, serving as president of Washington School PTA, and was instrumental in organizing the Kiwanis Club. He also belonged to the Footprinter's Association and the Peace Officer's Assoc. Ken attended the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington D.C. and was President of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the National Academy Assoc. in 1970. Mr. Owens is survived by his son, William Michael Owens of Los Angeles, CA; grandsons, Casey Canterbury of Boston MA, Kelly (Andrea) Canterbury of Arlington, TX, and Corey (Carie) Canterbury of Canon City, CO; and great grandchildren, Owen, Kayelan, Hayden, Riley, and Collin. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Kenya Canterbury; parents; two brothers; and one sister. Memorial Service will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 3, 2012 at Canon Community Baptist Church in Canon City, CO. Inurnment will follow at Mountain Vale Memorial Park in Canon City, CO. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Ken's favorite charity, SMILE TRAIN at PO Box 96231, Washington, D.C. 20090-6231.
