United States Army (retired), 81 of Canton, Ohio, died peacefully in the home Sunday, June 1, 2014 after a short battle with cancer. Born in Wooster, Ohio July 11, 1932 to the late Sherman and Ethel (Earl) Moreland, he is preceded in death by siblings, Russell and Edward Piper, Sherman Moreland Jr, Ida Fox, Ethel Meier, and Beatrice Emory. Carl is joyfully reunited in the Kingdom of Heaven with his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, the late Polly (Thorpe) Moreland. Beloved father to Patti O'Malley of Louisville, Ohio, Carl (the late Brenda) Moreland, Jr. of Louisville, Ohio, Cynthia (James) Brownlee of Bolivar, Ohio, and Russell (Tonee) Moreland of Greentown, Ohio. Adoring grandfather to Brian (Jennifer) Hunter, Catherine O'Malley, Andrew (Kari) Moreland, Kristen (David) Goodhart, Tracey Carter, Amber (Eric) Valentine, Russell Moreland, Reannan Moreland and Taryn (Alex) Eberhardt; and loving great-grandfather of 12. Carl leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, army comrades and church family who will miss his kind heart, loving nature and words of wisdom.
Carl graduated in 1950 from Carrollton High School, and devoted his 20 year military career to serving his country in both Korea and Vietnam where he was the recipient of numerous awards including the Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star and the Army Commendation Medal. An active member off the 8th Cavalry Regiment Association, Carl served for numerous years as secretary/treasurer, historian, webmaster and board member. He was a devoted and active member of Beechwood Christian Church (on Easton) in Alliance, Ohio, past master of three Masonic lodges and was a member of the Scottish Rite and American Legion Post 432 in Waynesburg, Ohio.
Family and friends may call at the Reed Funeral Home (Canton Chapel) Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. with Masonic services at 1:45 p.m. and funeral services at 4 p.m. officiated by Minister Mark Black. Following cremation, internment will be held at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio with full military honors. "Amos is waiting for Kingfish and Red Rider on the trail to Fiddlers' Green". Special thanks to Dr. Randall Harris and Mercy Medical Center Hospice for the outstanding care provided to Carl during his illness.
