Colleen Curtis-Smith
On July 4, 2014 Colleen Curtis-Smith went to sleep in time. On July 5, 2014 she woke up in eternity. Colleen was born to the late Burl and Elizabeth Carmichael. She graduated from McKinley High School. She attended Spelman College and received her BA and Master's degrees from Howard University while working at the National Security Agency. Upon returning to Ohio, she attended Kent and The Ohio State Universities and obtained her teaching certification. Colleen served the community as a teacher for 34 years, retiring in 1989. She taught at Allen and Gibbs Elementary, Crenshaw Junior High, and in Adult Education at Timken. She was a drama director, cheerleading coach, mentor, community leader, humanitarian, and performer. She was active in the Red Hatters Club and loved her church of 50 years St Paul AME. She received many awards including the Juneites Roast, Negro Old Timers Outstanding Person, St. Paul AME Seniority Award, and the Outstanding Citizen Award.
In addition to her parents, Colleen was preceded in death by her first husband, Leon Curtis and second husband, James Smith. She leaves to cherish her memory son, from her first marriage, Lance (Angela) Curtis; grandsons from this union, Austin and Ari of Massillon; by second marriage the family was blended to include daughters, Linda (Wayne) Wiggins, Ravene (Bruce) Allison, Tina (Jeff) Foreman; son, Michael Smith all of Canton and Stark County; ten grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; a host of dear friends, colleagues, and students. Her family was her greatest joy as she always wanted a large family.
Calling hours will be held Friday, July 18, 2014 from 6 p.m.–8 p.m. and Saturday, July 19, 2014, 11 a.m.–12 p.m. Celebration of life service will be held July 19, 2014 at 12 p.m. All will be held at St. Paul AME Church 1800 East Tuscarawas Street Canton, Ohio.
