91, of Alliance, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at 2:45 p.m. at the House of Loreto in Canton, Ohio. Born on Sept. 26, 1921 in Alliance, he lived in Alliance all of his life. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. A veteran of World War II, he served our country in the U. S. Army. He had been deployed to Africa, Sicily and Italy and had received 4 Bronze Stars. He retired from the Alliance Machine Co. after 46 years of service, where he had been a Hydraulic Pipe Fitter. Mr. Zeni was a member and Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council #558. He had also been a member of the V.F.W. Post #1036, the United Steel Workers and the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #467. In his pastime, he enjoyed music and art. He was an accomplished and well known musician, playing the accordion and keyboard. Elmer shared his love of music by teaching accordion and performing in various bands throughout Northeast Ohio, most notably the Esquires. Mr. Zeni brought joy by sharing his landscape drawings and editorial cartoons to many people in the community.
Survivors include his daughter, Mary Beth Zeni of Lakewood; his two sons, Matthew Brian Zeni of Pensacola, Fla. and Thomas G. Farrell of Alliance; two sisters, Dolores Scaia of Alliance and Esther McCann of Alliance; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, Isadore and Louise (Giovanazzi) Zeni; and a sister, Annie Scaia.
The family will receive friends at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012 from 9-11 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Fr. Matthew M. Mankowski as celebrant. Interment, with military honors provided by the Alliance American Legion Post 166 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1036, will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
