age 87, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 17, 2014 in Aultman's Compassionate Care Center. He was born in Canton to the late Donald and Edna Furney and was a 1945 graduate of Timken High School. Gene, a US Marine Corps Veteran, served in both World War II and the Korean War. On a GI Bill, he received a degree in electronics which led to his employment with the Ohio Bell Co. (1953-1960). He was founder and CEO of Canton Maintenance, servicing locally prominent businesses for decades and in later years, partnered in E-Z Manufacturing Co. Gene had a love for classic cars and welcomed a good competitive gin game. His cunning skill prompted his nickname, 'The Silver Fox'. Gene cherished his winter getaways, with his wife, to the warmth of the Florida gulf coast, sitting on a balcony, sipping a Manhattan while watching the sun set.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Donald Furney. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Bobbie (Weber) Furney; son, Scot (Belinda) Furney; granddaughter, Carrie (Jordan) Hall; Leah (Jerome) Ball; soon to be great-grandchild, Hall; brother, Wm Russell (Marge) Furney; sister, Sheila Gheen; sisters-in-law, Annie Marie Furney, Shelley Mulroy, Sue-Ann St. Jean; brothers-in-law, Marc Weber, Chris Weber, and many nieces and nephews.
How do I find the words to describe my husband? This loving, selfless, sensitive man was the love of my life. He was young at heart, funny, and generous with his knowledge and wisdom. I am still learning from him 'not to sweat the small stuff'. What a great loss to all of us fortunate enough to have had Gene in our lives.
Cremation has taken place with no services per Gene's request.
