John 'Shaft' H.W. Chandler
Age 71, went home to be with the Lord on July 21, 2013. He was born to the late Kizzie and Eddie Chandler on December 12, 1941, in Jonestown, Miss. He was a 1956 graduate of Washington High School. He married Diane Cleveland on December 24, 1976 and they spent 37 wonderful years together until his passing.
John Shaft as he was known to his family and friends proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. 'SEMPER FI' during Vietnam. After his military service he worked for Indian River School for several years until he went to work as an over the road truck driver. John Shaft's work ethic was undeniable, work hard and be the best at anything you do and all goals will be reached. Make no excuses – just make it happen!!! He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He will forever be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
He is survived by his wife, Diane; his children: Carla Downing, John Watson Chandler Jr., Monica Jojuana Chandler, Michael Cleveland, Charissa Cleveland and Tiffany Chandler; 20 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his siblings: Eddie Mae Harris, Nathaniel Chandler, Melvina Danzy, LeZora Young and William Chandler; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Cora Jean Chandler-Hillary; and his grandson, Andrew John Chandler.
A Funeral Service will be held at the City Hope United Methodist Church on Monday, July 29, 2013, at 1 p.m., Rev. Rich Asbery officiating. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m., until the time of the service. Burial will take place at Western Reserve National Cemetery.
