John Mason Bonar
88, of Hartville, Ohio, went home to be with his Savior on Thursday morning, March 6,
2014, at his home. He was born in Moundsville, W.Va., to James and Icie (Mason) Bonar on Nov. 19, 1925. Following graduation from John Marshall High School, he bravely served his country as a Marine in World War II in the South Pacific. He proudly played as a member of the U.S. Marine Band. After the war, he earned his B.S. and Masters degrees in music from Kent State University. He was dearly loved as the first band director of Lake High School and the band director at Lehman High School for many years. He served on the Lake Local School Board and was instrumental in building the current high school. He was an active member of the Canton Grace Brethren Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and musician. Over 40 years were devoted to Gideons International, where he held local and state leadership positions. His life exemplified a giving spirit and a loving heart in service to his Lord.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Corinne, of 54 years. He was a loving father to daughters: Gail (Larry) Vaughn of Wabash, Ind., Melanie (Rob) Wilkins of Etowah, N.C., and Charline (Kevin) Engle of Wooster, Ohio; devoted grandfather to Bethany (Jordan) Muck, Melody (Joel) Downs, and Heather (Aaron) Hyden; Taylor, Ethan, and Annalyse Wilkins; and Carissa, Benjamin, and Hannah Engle; and wonderful great-grandfather to Corinne and Gianna Muck. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jesse and Bob Bonar; and sister, Mary (Bonar) Evans. He is survived by his brother Jim Bonar of California.
Family will receive friends Wednesday, March 12th., 3:00-7:00 p.m. at Arnold Funeral Home, 1517 Market Ave., Canton, with a Gideon service at 6:45 p.m. A funeral and memorial service will be held Thursday, March 13th., 11:00 a.m. at the Canton Grace Brethren Church followed by interment at Sunset Hills Memory Gardens with Pastor Joe Cosentino officiating. Friends may call one half hour prior to the memorial service. Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International, P.O.
