Raymond L. Fier
82, of Dellroy, Ohio, passed away Aug. 30, 2013 from complications after a stroke. He was born Sept. 27, 1930 in Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated from Collinwood High School in 1949 and entered Hiram College. He interrupted his schooling serving in the Coast Guard during the Korean War and then graduated from Case Western Reserve School of Applied Science with a P.E. degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in the state of Ohio. He invented and designed many items from NASA's Crawler & satellites, to truck suspensions, automatic welding machines, rail road maintenance machines and in many other industries. Ray was a resident of Ohio for most of his life. He founded American Highway Products in 1978, at the age of 48. Using his imaginative mind to design and patent three manhole risers along with the machines to manufacture them during his 18 years of running American Highway Products. Ten years after his retirement at the age of 75, he designed and patented his last manhole riser for American Highway Products. Ray was known for his hearty laugh and bright smile. He enjoyed golfing, bowling (300 game), traveling in his RV, sailing and snorkeling, playing his accordion with many button box groups, dancing the polka, dining with friends and family, and watching the Browns games. Ray appreciated his friends and family, and was always happy to share a laugh and smile.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Evelyn; and his two sons, Eric (wife, Debbie) and Scott (wife, Virginia); and four grandchildren, Carmen, Kayla, Courtney and Dominic Fier; and step-grandson, James; as well as his niece, Lori Suhre and many cousins. Ray is preceded in death by his parents, John and Rose Fier, and his sister, Dorthy Nelson.
A celebration of Ray's life will be held at RiverTree Church at 7373 Portage St. NW, Massillon, Ohio beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013 with Jess Adkins officiating. Following the celebration a reception will be held at the home of Scott Fier at 7765 Cricket Circle NW, Massillon, OH 44646. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Community Hospice of Carroll County, 1040 Trump Road, Suite B, Carrollton, OH 44615. The family would like to thank all the wonderful, caring staff with the Hospice Care Center for their assistance and support, along with, Lisa Jones and Linda Renner. Their love and affection is truly appreciated. Lebold-Smith Funeral Home at Bolivar is handling the arrangements.
