'Together Again'
Robert J. Matthews
Age 95 of Canton, passed away Thursday morning in The Inn at University Village. He was born in Barnesville, Ohio, a son of the late George and Ella (Heil) Matthews, and had been a Canton resident since 1941. Bob was a 1935 graduate of Barnesville High School, and was honored by induction into the Barnesville High School Hall of Fame. He was the founder of the Robert J. Matthews Co., known locally as PBS Animal Health, in 1941. Bob was a member of Christ the Servant Parish at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, a former long-time member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, which he served as an Elder and Deacon, and the Rotary Club of Canton, which he served as a Trustee, and also had been co-chairman and founder with Merritt Wolfe of the Canton Excellence Program. He also had chaired the Attendance Committee when there was 90% attendance at most of the meetings, and he had perfect attendance for all of his 35 years of membership. He had been honored as a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club. Preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Kathryn M. (Cox) Matthews, on Sept. 8, 2011; a son, James Stephen Matthews, on Aug. 7, 2012; and an infant son, Ronald Mark Matthews.
Survived by three daughters, Rev. Kathryn Matthews Huey (Jacqueline), of Cleveland, Elaine (Hank) Kappel, of Canton, and Libby (Steve) Toohey, of Massillon; five sons, Dr. Robert K. (Dee) Matthews, of Canton, Daniel (Suzette) Matthews, of North Canton, George (Jane) Matthews, of Massillon, John (Brenda) Matthews, of Canton, and Charles (Janet) Matthews, of Alexandria, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Catherine Matthews, of Circleville, Ohio; 22 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
A Presbyterian Service will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. in the Formet-Clevenger & Gordon Funeral Home with Pastor C. David Morgan and Bob's daughter, Rev. Kathryn Matthews Huey officiating. A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Christ the Servant Parish with Msgr. Lewis F. Gaetano as Presider and Fr. James McKarns as Homilist. Following lunch at Noon in the church Fellowship Hall, interment will be in Calvary Cemetery at 2 p.m. Friends may call Sunday 1-4 p.m. in the Formet-Clevenger & Gordon Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Matthews' memory may be made to Christ the Servant Parish, Calvary Presbyterian Church or the Canton Rotary Club Charitable Fund. Condolences may be sent to:
