92, of Canton, Ohio, died Wednesday, March 5, 2014 in Fort Myers, Fla. Born to the late Anna Seccombe and Russell Whitney Umbenhour, Jan. 12, 1922, Russell graduated from Canton McKinley High School in 1940, where he served as President of his senior class. He went on to graduate from Case Institute of Technology in 1943 with a degree in metallurgical engineering. That year he entered the U.S. Naval Academy, serving as Engineering Officer for the USS West Virginia. Russ proudly recalled his service in the Philippine Campaign, the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa and his presence at the signing of the Peace Treaty at Tokyo Bay in 1945. Russ was called back to serve on the USS Wisconsin during the Korean War as a senior lieutenant.
Following World War II Russ began his civilian career working at Timken Roller Bearing Co., and then Standard Register Company in Ohio. In 1960, Russ became a partner at Noeth Air Conditioning in Cleveland until 1981, when he founded Umbenhour, Inc., retiring in 1989. Russ married the love of his life, Ethel Snyder of Paris, Ohio in 1947. They lived in Westlake, Ohio from 1954 until 2000, when they moved to Fort Myers, Fla. Russ was an avid golfer, belonging to the Lakewood Country Club (Ohio) and after retirement, the Forest Country Club (Florida).
Russ was preceded in death by his daughter, Kimberly and his brother, James Umbenhour of Canton, Ohio. As a cherished husband, brother, father and grandfather, Russ is survived by his loving wife, Ethel of 67 years; his younger brother, Bill; his daughters, Sue Umbenhour Oatey and Jan (John) Husband; his grandchildren, Courtney, Gary and Chris (Annie) Oatey, Heather (Adam) Coker and John (Robin) Husband; great-grandchildren, Satya and Jules, Sidney, Landon and Avery.
Interment and memorial service will be announced at a future date.
