aged 93, beloved by his family, friends and cousins, passed away the morning of Oct. 12 in Canton, Ohio. Born in Ft. Wayne, Ind. in 1920, he was the son of Kaleel and Sadie Shaheen, immigrants from Syria. He won a scholarship to attend Yale University, graduated in 1942, and joined the Navy, serving as a lieutenant in the Pacific fleet. He received a commendation from Admiral Nimitz for repairing the radar on a battleship, which saved many lives. After the war, he received a second degree from MIT in Architecture. In 1947 he married Joan Julia Shaheen, with whom he shared 66 years of love and companionship.
He designed many notable buildings in Ohio and Illinois, including the Shaheen Oriental Rug store, the Akron General Hospital, and the St. George Syrian Orthodox Church Social Hall. He authored the book Practical Project Management on construction management and taught the subject at Kent State University. At the time of his death, he was working on a second book on architecture and philosophy.
He was preceded in death by his brother Louis and sister Abla. He will be missed by his wife Joan and five children: Miranda, Pablo of Chicago, Ill., Chris (Bonnie) of Lake City, Fla., Amy (Thomas Ng) of New York City, and Franklin; his nine grandchildren in Lake City: Nathan, Jonathan, Daniel, David, Michael, Michelle Rimert, Tim, Joel, and Jennifer Skowron, and 20 great- grandchildren. The family would like to thank cousins Julia Freije and Sadie Shaheen and caregivers Diana Newman, Evelyn Hukill and Tiffany Slovan for their devoted care and support.
A Memorial Service will be held on Oct. 28 at 11:30 in the St. George Social Hall at 1122 Cherry Ave. N.E. Friends may visit the family in the hall before the service at 10:30. Donations in his name may be given to Sadie Shaheen for the Crusaders of Canton or to Grace Hospice.
