Victor Rogers
83, of Alliance, died peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012 at 10:15 a.m. at Bel Air Care Center, surrounded by his family. He was born on Dec. 15, 1928 in Depew, N.Y. and lived in Alliance all of his life. He was a graduate of Alliance High School in 1947. A veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served our country in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of the 724th Air Force Band Squadron. He was a member of St. Theodore Romanian Catholic Church and St. George Romanian Catholic Cathedral of Canton. He retired from Morgan Engineering after 36 years, where he was employed as a machinist. He then worked for the Alliance City Schools for 10 years. Mr. Rogers was a member of the American Legion Post 166. Vic Rogers has been a well-known accomplished musician (saxophone player) in the area for over 50 years and started three bands; these included The Rhythm Airs, The Vic Rogers Orchestra, and The Esquires. They played a variety of music and were best known for their Romanian music. Over the years they played for thousands of people bringing happiness and joy at weddings and many other events.
He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia (Sas) Rogers of 58 years whom he married on Aug. 7, 1947; sons, Mike (Lisa) Rogers of Louisville, Mark (Carol) Rogers of Cincinnati, and Victor Rogers of Alliance; grandchildren, Taylor and Madison Rogers of Louisville and Zachary Rogers of Cincinnati; twin brother, George (Ruth) Rogers of Alliance; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, Savu and Ludovica (Streza) Rogers; and brother, Charles Rogers.
The family will receive friends at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. There will be a Saracusta Service on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. Ovidu Marginean of St. George Romanian Catholic Church of Canton officiating. Interment, with military honors provided by the Alliance American Legion Post 166 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1036, will follow at Alliance City Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Victor Rogers Memorial Musical Scholarship Fund, c/o Alliance High School Band Department, 200 Glamorgan Street, Alliance, OH 44601.
