Alfred Smith Obituary

SMITH JR., ALFRED JAMES A deeply loving husband and devoted friend, he was an accomplished soldier who served 20 years in the US Army. He saw combat duty in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War as an airborne infantry noncommissioned officer. Among his many military achievements, he was awarded the Master Parachute Badge, Glider Badge, Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Citation, Air Medal, Bronze Star, and Combat Infantry Badge (2 awards). He was handpicked to join the initial cadre of the Army Special Forces (Green Berets), helping to develop the tactics, techniques and procedures that were used during the Cold War and Vietnam era. After his retirement from the Army, he embarked on a new military career in support of his wife's 30-year Air Force career, an active role that not only continued his globe-spanning journey, but one that led to his wife's success as a colonel and military commander. He was an avid adventurer and traveler, expert chess player and selfless instructor, and skilled kite flyer; he rode and enjoyed motorcycles throughout his life, and created unique collections of anything that caught his interest. His warmth and humor touched people around the world, and deeply enriched the lives of his family and friends. Services were held on Tuesday January 7, 2014 in Odenton, MD Interment with military honors will be held at a later date. Online condolences can be made at www.hardestyfuneralhome.com
