Donald L. Avery, of Annapolis, diedunexpectedly January 24 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He was born in Syracuse, NY in 1949, the son of Leon and Marjorie Avery. As a child, he played baseball and enjoyed sailing. With an interest in electronics, he became a licensed amateur radio operator at age 13. He graduated from Purdue University with a degree in meteorology with three minors, and received his master's degree from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. Donald spent his working career as a naval officer, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. He spent over a decade working in the private sector as a corporate senior executive in four companies, as a telecommunications engineering innovator and professional coach. His professional life, however, was eclipsed by his volunteer work and spiritual studies. He was currently employed as a professional sailor with Schooner Woodwind in Annapolis. He was also an active volunteer with Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center and Talisman Therapeutic Riding in Grasonville. His life was spent pursuing sailing, music, amateur radio, reading, horses and nature. He cherished his cat, Cheesie. He is survived by his life partner Beth (Gracie) Cole; his younger brother, Richard Avery; his children, D. Scott Avery and Melissa A. (Avery) Glunt; four grandchildren, Hailey N. Glunt, Paige R.
