James Courtney Obituary

James Courtney

James R. Courtney, 96, of Charlestown Retirement Community of Catonsville, and previously of Woodbridge, VA and Port Richey, FL, died July 19 at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore.
He was born on June 20, 1916 in Baltimore, the son of the late Winfield H. and Mae G. (Kirby) Courtney.
In 1968, Mr. Courtney retired with the rank of Major
from the United States Marine Corps following 34 years of service. His last assignment was as Commander of Officer Candidate School in Quantico, VA. He enjoyed working in his woodshop and was considered to be a fine craftsman.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Althea (Abbott) Courtney; and nine brothers and sisters.
Mr. Courtney is survived by a daughter, Donna J. Courtney of Crofton; a son, Donald J. Courtney of York, PA; grandchildren, Jennifer A. and Donald R. Courtney of Topeka, KS; great grandchildren, Kassie and Christopher Lester of Topeka, KS; and a special nephew, Bud Waller and family of Freeland.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 25, at Mt. Zion Methodist Church, 20901 Mt. Zion Rd., Freeland, with Rev. Dr. Peggy Click officiating. Interment with military honors will be in the church cemetery.
J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom, PA is assisting the family with arrangements.
