Jessie Travlos Obituary

Jessie Travlos, 98, affectionately known as "Wokkie," died January 1. She was a 13 year resident of Gambrills. Born on February 19, 1915 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Jessie lived in Johannesburg until 2000, where she had a dress designing and dress making degree and worked as a manager for a dress factory from 1937-1949. She also volunteered as a nurse to help wounded soldiers during World War II. Developing a talent for sewing by age11, she sewed sequins onto high heeled platform shoes designed by a well known shoe designer that were given to Queen Elizabeth II before the passing of her father, King George VI. She donated hundreds of homemade clothes to her daughter's school for fundraising. In addition to sewing for her daughter and husband, Jessie also enjoyed music and gardening. Jessie was preceded in death by her husband, Nicholas Travlos. She is survived by her daughter, Andriana Canning of Gambrills, and three grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 4, at the Hardesty Funeral Home, 851 Annapolis Rd., Gambrills (21054) In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Crofton Care and Rehabilitation Center. 2131 Davidsonville Rd., Crofton, MD 21114.
