LCDR John Thomas Doherty, USN (Ret.), 90, died peacefully April 4 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Born February 6, 1924 in Malden, Massachusetts to the late Stanley and Mary Doherty, John enlisted in the United States Navy in March, 1942 and served on active duty until December of 1969. He is the recipient of the Combat Action Ribbon with two stars, the Korean Service Medal with two stars, the Vietnam Service Medal with two stars, as well as the Navy Good Conduct Medal with four stars. Duty stations include the USS Natchez PF-2, USS Robert A. Owens DDE-827, USS Guadalcanal LPH-7, USS Annapolis AGMR-1, Commander Transport DIV 14, PIBPAC, USS Okanogan APA-215, and Officer in charge Hydrographic Office Panama Canal Zone. Following retirement from the Navy in 1969, Jack worked in Contract Sales for Sears and Roebuck, was active in Eagle Haven Golf Association and enjoyed spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, the former Lillie Hill Robertson; son, Cdr. John Thomas Doherty, Jr. USN (Ret.),and his wife Carleen; daughter Nancy Marie Wright and her husband Jerry; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Reilly, Juliane Kelly, Mary Doherty and Sean Doherty and four great-grandchildren; and several other family members. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, April 11, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 1457 Independence Blvd, Virginia Beach. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. April 12, at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek Chapel. Interment arrangements will follow at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
