John Gurtshaw Obituary

GURTSHAW, JOHN ANTHONY, a former resident of Bowie and Crofton, died suddenly at his home on Tuesday, January 8, 2013. John was born to William and Margaret Gurtshaw in 1957 in Washington, D.C. His family moved to Bowie in 1966. John graduated from Bowie High School in 1975 and furthered his education at Frostburg State University, graduating with his BA in Business. He worked for several years as an accountant with Beers & Cutler and in real estate finance with Coakley & Williams. He later helped establish The Rockledge Group, a commercial real estate finance firm in Greenbelt, Maryland. John retired to Ocean Pines, MD and lived there for the past few years. John was an avid fisherman, and loved being near the ocean. He traveled to the Outer Banks yearly with his family. He also loved to play golf, was an excellent cook, and a master at crossword puzzles. He is survived by his former wife, Nancy Gurtshaw of Crofton, his four sons, John Andrew Gurtshaw of Reisterstown, Matthew Gurtshaw of Crofton, Christopher Gurtshaw of Arlington, and Joseph Gurtshaw of Crofton. He is also survived by his four siblings, Susanne Gilmer of Bowie, Jan Tapley of Gambrills, Elaine Clough of Richmond, VA, and William "Dutch" Gurtshaw of Bowie, along with 23 nieces and nephews. I do find myself thinking about John and saddened to remember that he passed at such a young age. We met in the summer before 8th grade at the Pointer Ridge pool. We became friends and he was a great help to me in making the transition from Catholic School to the newly opened Tasker Jr. High public school, having him as a friend. Once in Bowie HS, I was bused in 10th grade to Largo in Jan 1973, what a shock that was. We dated a bit during our HS days and John had a job at a bank down the street from where I lived. I would take the activity bus home and get off at the shopping center there and talk to him through the drive-up window and exchange notes we wrote each other during the school day (the old fashioned way, no texting in those days!) Very fond memories of our friendship.
I pray he is resting in peace and looking down on his family with love.

John and I met in Jr high and remained friends throughout our school years. Haven't touched base in years so am very rattled by his passing. I will miss my old friend....may God bless him and his family.

John worked with us at Coakley & Williams years ago. He was always very nice to me. I'm truly sorry to hear of his passing.
