John Thomas "Tommy" Henderson, 81, a resident of Annapolis, died July 4 at home after a lengthy illness. Born October 22, 1931 in Norfolk, VA, the son of Caldonia Johnson and the late Thomas Henderson , Tommy was raised in Annapolis by his mother and step-father the late Norman Johnson, Jr. and attended Mt. Moriah AME Church. He attended Stanton Elementary School and graduated from Wiley H. Bates High School in 1949. Tommy served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955. He later attended Morgan State University in Baltimore, where he was a member of the Phalanx Fraternity. He spent much of his time with family and friends playing tennis or on his boat called "Jumby." In addition to his father and step-father, Tommy was preceded in death by his son, Jerrold Henderson of New York, NY; two sisters, Ann Lemley and Norma Johnson-Brock; and nephew, Darien Hudson; along with other aunts, uncles and cousins. Along with his mother Caldonia, 99, Tommy is survived by his beloved wife Olivia N. (Wright) Henderson of New York, NY; son, Jamy Henderson of Glen Burnie; six daughters, Thomasine Brown, Denise Hector (Robert), Kim Gray, Toni Gross, all of Annapolis, Vera Holland of Glen Burnie, Josie Rock of Baltimore; sister, Hobsy Johnson of Glen Burnie; seven grandsons; four granddaughters; two nephews; and many great-grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held Thursday, July 11 at Mt. Moriah AME Church at 2204 Bay Ridge Avenue, Annapolis. Rev. Dr. Carrington Carter, Pastor. Viewing will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. and the funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, 1122 Sunrise Beach Road, Crownsville. Arrangements have been entrusted to W.M. Reese & Sons Mortuary.
