Mary Coghill Obituary

COGHILL, MARY LUCILLE (LUCY) HOCUTT, wife of the late Colonel Cornelius Wesley Coghill, Jr. and long time resident of Crofton, MD, passed away quietly at Sunrise Assisted Living in Annapolis, MD on Thursday, October 3, 2013, four days short of her 91st birthday. Mrs. Coghill was born in Ocean View, Virginia to Lessie May and William Everett Hocutt on October 7, 1922. She grew up in Rocky Mount, North Carolina and married Wesley on January 26, 1946 following his safe return from Europe and World War II. As an Army wife, she moved around the country with Wesley during his 31 years of service and always made each new home a welcome place for friends and family. Social, fashionable, and lively, Lucy loved parties and was an accomplished hostess. Wherever she and Wesley were stationed, Lucy brought her unique Southern style and charm, and she never lost touch with her Eastern North Carolina roots, nor did she lose her engaging Southern accent. She found time to volunteer at the hospital, teach Sunday school and engage in other community activities while raising a family. Lucy worked hard at and took pride in being the best officer's wife that she could be and was a gracious complement to Wesley's career. They retired to Crofton, MD in 1970 and continued to participate actively in both their local community and the Fort Meade community and chapel until Colonel Coghill passed away in January of 1996, the day after their 50th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Coghill continued to live in Crofton until 2006 when she moved to Sunrise of Annapolis. She is survived by her three children (Karen Coghill Wells of Burke, VA; Cornelius Wesley Coghill, III of Charlotte, NC and Julie Coghill Kreger of Norfolk, VA), five grandchildren (James S.D. Wells, Charles W. Wells, Sarah C. Jenkins, Anna W. Coghill, and Richard H. Kreger) and six great grandchildren (Jackson S. Wells, Nathan M. Wells, Caroline J. Jenkins, Charles W. Jenkins, Jonathan W. Wells and Leanna E. Wells -- born October 4, 2013). Her brother, William E. Hocutt, predeceased her in June of this year. Services will be held at the Fort Meade Argonne Hills Chapel Center at 2PM on Saturday, November 2, 2013. For further information go to www.hardestyfuneralhome.com.

Coghill Family:
Our deepest sympathy in the passing of a most gracious lady - the one with the warm smile. We will always remember her beauty and southern accent from Rocky Mount, NC. What a wonderful person and family. We were greatly blessed to have known Lucy and Wes. The Coghill family means a great deal to us.
God Bless each and everyone,
