Michael Kenneth Pumphrey, 54, of Severna Park, died July 25 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center.
He was born May 31, 1956, in Baltimore, to the late Linton B. and Ilse M. Pumphrey. Michael was a 1974 graduate of Severna Park High School and graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1979 with a degree in Art Studio. At Maryland, Michael was a member of the Diamondback newspaper staff and drew a popular cartoon feature for the paper. After graduation, he was an editorial cartoonist and illustrator for the Journal Newspapers.
His work career with ARD, General Physics, and Honeywell (Big Dig, Boston) took him all over the country where he made lifelong friends. He was most recently employed with BITH Group Technologies in Baltimore.
Michael was a former representative to the Greater Severna Park Council, a past membership Director for the North Cape Arthur Swim Club, and played cards monthly with the original North Cape Arthur Poker Club. As a lifelong learner, he enjoyed collaborating with other WWII history enthusiasts to write features for Wikipedia. His eye for detail and thorough research earned him Wikipedia honors from his peers. He was an avid supporter of Maryland Athletics, particularly Women's Lacrosse, and enjoyed friendly banter with posters on Laxpower. He especially enjoyed attending Raven games with his brother, Lint.
Michael loved to debate current events, and took pride in finding and buying items made in the USA, and encouraged others to do the same. He was a frequent winner in the Capital Newspaper's yearly Tacky Postcard contest. Michael also took pleasure in supporting the Severna Park Stage Company, Rock N Roll Revival, and any activity in which his daughters participated.
He was preceded in death by his brother, David M. Pumphrey.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Ann; daughters, Katie and Emily; brother, Linton C. Pumphrey; three sisters, Linda Senger, Mary Joyce and Betty Pumphrey; and many loving nieces and nephews. A celebration of Michael's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 29 on St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 308 Oak Manor Drive, Glen Burnie. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to programs that Michael supported and enjoyed: Maryland Women's Lacrosse, checks can be made out to UMCPF and mailed to: Women's Lacrosse, 1727 Comcast Center, College Park, Maryland 20742; the Holden Beach Turtle Watch (a nonprofit corporation/ tax deductible ID number 56-2094388.) mail to Turtle Patrol, PO Box 487, Supply, North Carolina 28462; or Friends of AA County Trails, PO Box 464, Severna Park, MD 21146.

Dear Ann, Katie and Emily, Our family just learned about your husband/Dad. We are so incredibly saddened by this news. Your whole family was always so kind in including Kalyn on the family vacations to Holden beach. Mike had such a kind, gentle spirit that made him a favorite with all who were fortunate enough to know him. God bless all of you during this time.
Our love to you all, Kathi, Don, Kalyn and Kim Perkins

Oh Ann, When I saw you today at your Mom's remembrance I had no idea of your loss. You were doing so wonderfully meeting everyone, and reminicing and just being your bubbly self. I heard someone make a comment that caused me to realize that something had happened... Now I know and want to send you my sympathy and love. As Rev Dillon said, you have born the greatest pain, but will receive the greatest blessings. I hope that is abundantly realized for you and your lovely girls in the coming weeks and months, Mary Conlon

Ann and Family,
It was with great sadness that I received the news about Mike. Mike was a caring person and was one of the most unselfish people I have had the honor to work with. We were teammates on the Big Dig and I really enjoyed lunchtime conversatins. They were always interesting. Please accept my condolences.

To the family,
Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of your husband, father, brother, and friend. Our paths crossed a few years ago when I managed his daily tasks on the Prince Georges County Public Schools engagement. I will miss his big smile and gentle mannerism. May he rest in peace.

I'll always remember the trips to the Squadron Hobby shop followed by ice cream. The old "haunted" house we all found in the woods. Swinging from the vine over the dry river bed and playing with tanks. Some of my fondest memories.

Ann, Katie and Emily,
We are so incredibly sorry to hear this sad news. I feared something was worng when I saw you dressed up in the backyard yesterday, with company - it just seemed odd and out of character. I will remember Mike for his larger than life nature - sence of humor and creative writing / emails. Please let us know what we can do.

I was six years old when I was told my mother was bringing me a very special present. Daddy placed a big bassette box on my lap and in it was my baby brother Michael, (yes they sent babies home from the hospital in boxes in 1956). At the time I was not that thrilled with my present, even then I could understand that this meant I was no longer the baby of the family. However, I can now say with no hesitation that the best present I was even given by my parents was a baby brother named Michael.
I will miss you every day of my life, baby brother, until we can meet again with our heavenly Father.
Love you always,
Peggy & John Frerman

I've known Michael and Ann forever. At least it seems that way. Ann & I were college roommates and I was there when their computer (yes, we had computers way back then) brought the 2 of them together. Although, we do not get to see eachother often, we have remained good friends. Michael and I always had a lot of fun together, we worked together at our first jobs out of college. What laughs we had then. He will be surely missed and my heart goes out to Ann, Emily, Katie and the rest of his family. Love you guys.

This is my celebration of Michael’s life. I have known Michael for over 30 years. Our wives Janice and Ann attended high school along with Barb and Susie. The four women have stayed very close over the years. Over the past couple of days I have been thinking about the vacations the couples spent together at Ocean City, MD and Duck, NC. Trivial Pursuit was a new game then and Michael surprised the rest of us with his knowledge. Michael & Ann had a jeep that we drove all over the beach. The guys taught my 2 1/2 year old his colors that vacation by retrieving the right beer can color. Who remembers staying in the same place where we saw Frank Perdue?
I remember attending our wives high school reunions. We did not know many people but we certainly had a great time just the four guys. In fact, one reunion the drinks were so expensive that we went across the street to a package store purchased a case, took our beer to the hotel and watched college football. It may have been the Terps, I just don’t remember.
It is hard to believe Michael is gone. My thoughts go out to Ann, Katie, and Emily. Michael was a unique man. Ann and he complemented each other. He may not be with you in person but he has touched your hearts and will live there forever.
