Reid Gordon "Gordie" Abney, 74, an Annapolis resident, died September 22 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
He was born to Reid Aponte Abney and Beatrice Hughes Abney on April 3, 1938 in Washington DC.
Gordon was raised in Annapolis, attending Anne Arundel Public Schools and graduating from Wiley H. Bates High School in the Class of 1956.
He served three years in the U.S. Army as a Radio
Engineer in Communications, and was honorably discharged in 1963. Gordon then joined the Chemical Bank, followed by the New York City Police Department, retiring from the New Haven, CT Police Department. He then returned to Annapolis to be with his family. Gordon was married to Brenda Offer and Elizabeth Dorsey, with both marriages ending in divorce.
Gordie, as he was affectionately known, enjoyed boating, swimming, skiing, motorcycle riding, and especially reading his Bible.
He is survived by his beloved wife Ingeborg Abney; his mother, Beatrice Lillian Abney Felton; two sisters, Cynthia Elaine Abney-Carter (Elmo), and Thamathea Tubaya-Holmes; one brother, Darren Abney (Tracy); his children, Theodore L. Brown, Michael Crockett, Reid G. Abney III, Quinole Kevin Abney and Carlos Abney, all of Annapolis; Lamont C. Abney, Sean and Akron Abney of Connecticut; Tanya Diggs and Naomi Mendes-Abney of Annapolis; April and Holly Teixeira of Connecticut and Denton C. Aylor II of Annapolis; 21 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins, as well as devoted friends Michael Brandford of Florida, Ruben Huckaby of Connecticut and Joseph Hillary, John Bryant and Donald Snowden, all of Annapolis.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 29, at Second Baptist Church, 1808 Poplar Ave., Annapolis. Repast immediately following at Stanton Community Center, 92 West Washington St., Annapolis.
