He enlisted in the U. S. Navy, serving as a Cryptologic Technician Interpretative (Spanish Linguist) at the former Naval Security Group Activity, Fort Meade in support of the National Security Agency. Sam was a charter member of the Federal Web Managers Council and was part of the small team that wrote web policies for the Federal Government. Sam enjoyed world travel, reading, and sailing. He was proud of the fact that he had visited all 50 states and all but one continent. He participated in five Earthwatch programs, volunteering for adventures ranging from an archeological dig in Thailand to doing night watch over lions in Africa and frogs in Australia. Two years ago, he became an avid bicyclist, riding over 3,000 miles in 2013. Sam was active in the Cape St. Claire community for 17 years, serving in various capacities, including President of the Board of Governors of the Community Association, and helping form a nonprofit to preserve a historic farm in the area.
