George Gales Turner Jr., 83, a 53-year resident of Edgewater, died January 3 at home after a seven year battle with lung cancer. Born March 4, 1930 in Takoma Park to the late George and Katherine Turner, he was a 1949 graduate of Calvin Coolidge High School. George worked for fifty-five years in the printing industry, thirty of those years being the co-owner of Taylor Printing Company. He also served twenty-two years in the Washington, DC Army National Guard's 107th Engineer Company, where he held the rank of Major. George was presented the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for dedicated humanitarian service from the Lions Clubs International, as well as numerous service awards from the South Anne Arundel Lions Club. He served as chairman of the SAA Lions Club Annual Charity Golf Tournament, participated in photo eye screening for children and volunteered at the West River Methodist Camp for the Deaf and Blind. He was a member of South Anne Arundel Lions Club, Elks Lodge #622 and American Legion Post #226. He also enjoyed playing golf. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Turner, who passed away in 2001. George is survived by his wife of ten years, Carla Turner; two sons, Buddy Turner of College Park and Drew Turner of Hyattsville; four daughters, Vicki Brashears of Buena Vista, VA, Kristine James of Damascus, Candace Brown of Edgewater and Kim Gramza of Annapolis; sister, Jean Hubbard of Silver Spring; seven grandsons, Ben Brashears of Augusta, WV, Ian Turner of College Park, Robert Garland of Annapolis, Owen James of Damascus, Ben and Sam Brown of Edgewater and JD Turner; seven granddaughters, Lindsey Snider of Buena Vista, VA, Jennifer Garland and Jessica James of Damascus, Hannah and Abby Brown of Edgewater, Serena and Chelsea; three great-grandchildren, Caeley Brashears of Augusta, WV, John and Parker Snider of Buena Vista, VA. Friends are invited to George's Life Celebration from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, January 10, at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, January 11. Interment is at Lakemont Memorial Gardens.
