Bruno Henry Blonkowski, 94, of Westminster, died Monday, June 23, 2014, at Carroll Hospital Center.
Born June 16, 1920, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Chester and Sophie Chaya Blonkowski. He was the husband of Jacqueline Virginia Blonkowski, his wife of 68 years, who died in December 2012.
He worked in his family's bakery, Blonkowski Bakery, in Helmetta, New Jersey. A 1942 graduate of Rider College, he served in the Coast Guard as a radioman until 1945, as well as a member of the Coast Guard Band in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, where he met his wife. He later formed his own band, BB and the Sunnysiders, in Helmetta. He retired as an accountant from General Motors
, Delco-Remy Division.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in 1959 in South River, New Jersey; Scoutmaster of Troop 4, Boy Scouts of America from 1962 to 1968, in South River; president of the Kiwanis Club in East Brunswick, New Jersey, from 1966 to 1967; member of the Kiwanis Club in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, from 1978 to 1979; president of the Green Hills Lions Club in Wilmington, Delaware, from 1983 to 1984; and was a member of the Pleasant Valley Lions Club in Westminster from 1991 to the present. He was an avid golfer, playing golf into his 90s.
Surviving are son James and wife Alice Blonkowski, of Pleasant Valley; a daughter, Jacqueline Emond, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; a sister, Helen Gregory, of Toms River, New Jersey; grandchildren Kathryn Nelson, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Julianne Blonkowski, of Westminster, Christopher Kraft, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Kenneth Kraft, of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida; and great-grandchildren Loki and Joule Nelson, of Chapel Hill.
The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until the time of the Catholic prayer service, 6 p.m. Friday at Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster, with Paul Cooke, deacon, officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
