James Edward Gassaway, 87, of Sykesville, died Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Senior Constant Care in Winfield.
Born Feb. 24, 1927, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Robert Gassaway and Rosie Rheubottom Gassaway. He was the husband of Bessie A. Gassaway, who died in 2009.
He had retired as a therapeutic health aid from Springfield Hospital Center. He was a member of White Rock Church in Sykesville and was past commander of the VFW
Post 4438 at Turner Station in Dundalk. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Surviving are a daughter, Bessie Elaine Dorsey, of Cooksville; sons James Irvin Gassaway Jr. and Elston Howard Gassaway, both of Sykesville, and Ryne Jeffery Gassaway, of Westminster; brothers Howard "Jake" Gassaway, of Winfield, Robert "Sonny" Gassaway, of Randallstown, Joshua Gassaway, of Eldersburg, and Roscoe Gassaway, of Libertytown; sisters Helen Gassaway, of Catonsville, and Rosa Savoy, of Ellicott City; 13 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by siblings Walton, Mildred and Pauline Gassaway.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with his pastor, the Rev. Doug Sands, officiating. Interment will be in White Rock Cemetery in Sykesville.
